Tissue Engineering: The Orthodontic and the Periodontic Perspective

Orthodontic movement involves significant changes in tooth supporting structures. Hence, dentoalveolar tissue management becomes critical in patients who are highly prone to periodontal tissue breakdown and necessitate close collaboration between orthodontist and periodontist. The decision to perform appropriate soft and/or bone tissue modification will require comprehensive examination, diagnostic techniques such as CBCT, and interdisciplinary care defined by the orthodontist (necessary orthodontic tooth movement) and the periodontist (tissue augmentation) necessary for high quality outcomes and long-term stability.
